Commitment to Social Justice: Photovoice Presentation

This artifact was unique in that it required me to work with a Loyola student throughout fall semester to answer the following questions:

1) What does it mean for you to be a LUC student?

2) How do your various identities intersect and shape or your experiences at LUC?

Through the pictures she took, we were able to construct her narrative of how she has felt both included and marginalized at Loyola. Through constructing this narrative, I developed a greater sense of the ethical role higher education plays in fostering social justice and how it can range from the physical environment to the intangible support systems that exist on campus. Through my conversations with my participant, her identity as a social activist was one that she was beginning to develop - the source of which was rooted in her faith tradition. As an individual who does not subscribe to a faith tradition at the moment, having these conversations with her required me to reflect upon the source of my own commitment to social justice. For me the source came from interpersonal connections and a desire to better understand the lived experiences of those I interact with. It is my goal to establish a relationship of understanding and respect between myself and others. As such, I believe this artifact represents my understanding of the role higher education plays in addressing social justice issues, as well as my commitment to social justice.
