Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning

lifelong learner.JPG

When a person enters into education, they are signing on to become a life-long learner.  This goes for librarians just as much as teachers because the need for continuing education is universal. Education trends change and improve.  Standards are updated.  New technologies emerge.  In order for librarians to keep up-to-date with current library trends and policies, they must engage in professional development, collaborate with other librarians, and improve the quality of their libraries.  Not only are we life-long learners, but we are striving to provide an environment where students can learn to become library patrons and life-long learners themselves.

7A. The necessity of continuing professional development of practitioners in libraries

Students are not the only patrons who continue to learn in educational settings.  Teachers and librarians are constantly learning as well, and it is important to continue professional developement so that we stay up-to-date with current trends and initatives in education. Every month, I participate with the teachers in an 4 extra-hours of professional development where we get various trainings.  These might include technology training, medical aid training, faculty meetings, and curriculum meetings. Attached is an example of my training certificate of completion.

Because the AASL standards have been updated, it is essential to have trainings on how to read, unpack, and use them.  I will be attending a training on the new AASL standards in November of 2018, and attached is my conference request form as well as the description of the seminar.

Every year, I try to attend PSLA or PETE&C so that I can meet with other librarians and learn about new trends in the world of libraries.  The past two years I focused on PETE&C because our push for technology in the district.  While it can be overwhelming, it is a valuable experience.

7B. The role of the library in lifelong learning of patrons

The library is the hub of information literacy.  Patrons are not only coming to the library to check out books, they are learning how to be life-long learners in reguards to inquiry, collaboration, time-management, and research. Along with the students, teachers are lifelong learners as well.  When we brought on the 1:1 iniative at Twin Valley, I was asked to lead professional development on classroom management strategies for all of the teachers in the middle school and high school.  This presentation gives suggestions for how to handle classroom management in the physical sense and also in the digital sense.  On June 11th, 2018, I ran 6 sessions of Classroom Management Strategies for the teachers in the district.  It is important for them to see the library as a resource for their student but also for them. We play a major part in the 1:1 plan as students use the library for blended learning, flexible scheduling, Chromebook support, and research.  Attached is my classroom management presentation to the TVSD staff.

7C. Learning theories, instructional methods, and achievement measures and their application

As an educator, I am evaluated every year and I also have to write student learning objectives for the library.  With my administrators, we discuss what works well in the library and what could be improved for the next year.  How are we best serving students?  How can the library support student needs? FOr the 2017/2018 school year, I had a structured supervision by my principal.  For this, I demonstrated a lesson on showing the students Noodletools and how to make their Works Cited pages and research notecards.  Evaluation reports are not available until the state scores come in, so I am attaching the 2016-2017 evaluation.

My SLO plan revolved around helping students become avid library patrons and navigating the library on their own.  The students were to show mastery in performance indicators of identifying call numbers and locating resources in the library by using Destiny Quest. Attached is my SLO plan for 2017-2018.

7D. The principles related to the teaching and learning of concepts, processes, and skills

used in seeking, evaluating, and using recorded knowledge and information

As school districts, teachers, and librarians are preparing students to become 21st-Century learners, there are many Web 2.0 tools that are being developed and utilized in schools. Students are gravitating more towards digital technology to complete both school-related procedures and personal life tasks.

Two of the Web 2.0 tools that have been proven helpful in the Twin Valley School District are LibGuides and Google.  Google has an array of applications and resources available to it, and Twin Valley is beginning to utilize many of the great features like Google Classroom, Google Drive, and Google Apps for Education, which is now called Google Suite for Education. Attached is my final paper on LibGuides and Google as Web 2.0 tools and how they are useful tools for teaching and learning of concepts, processes, and skills.
