Reflection

This photo shows my commitment to deserved rights of marginalized communities and opportunities to take a stance on an issue that affects people of all communities. The slideshow exemplifies ways that I made efforts to take stances in hopes of making a change by participating in social justice initiatives, being active in protests, being president of the Black Cultural Center, and running for SGLC leadership positions, like Vice President with my dear friend Jason Pica II.

In the context of my Loyola Experience, commitment means a continuous dedication to something of genuine interest rooted in high personal value. I have best expressed my commitment to my academics and social justice through my consistent leadership in taking initiative. Commitment in this case means addressing the shortcomings in our community in order to make an impactful change. Taking initiative includes standing up for injustices, leading the charge for progress, and having conversations to educate others. My first commitment is to myself because if I am not at my best than I cannot put my best foot forward and maximize my potential. My commitment to myself involves my dedication to my academics and self-care/mental health, before I could dedicate a portion of time to campus involvement and community change I needed to be my best self. With my commitment to my academics, I also learned concepts in the classroom that gave me knowledge and information about events around the nation. I have expressed my commitment at Loyola in my efforts of changing school policies and having conversations with administrators, namely regarding the demonstration policy and the core curriculum. I was a member of SGLC in order to give marginalized communities on campus a voice and share knowledge with peers about changes taking place on campus as well as conversations held. I also helped co-chair an event, Color My Loyola, which helped administrators with Plan 2020 to improve the school’s effort towards diversity and inclusion. My commitment has impacted my experience at Loyola because having conversations about the lack of diversity present brought attention to the administration about strategically planning to reevaluate the systems they have in place and more connection to the students. I also think by participating in the different protests on campus, like LUC to Mizzou and Black Lives Matter, brought me out of my shell in speaking out against unjust situations. This experience stood out and created a memorable experience for Loyola and I will forever cherish those experiences.
