Reflection

Children's Research Triangle.jpg

This picture describes my ideal society and a culture that is inclusive and accepts people from all walks of life. This to me represents families teaching their children about diversity and loving one another while also being involved in their children’s development.

My learning, experiences, and passions connect with the need to keep fighting for equality and efforts towards a more just society. As we have seen lately, our nation still has work to be done to achieve the dreams and aspirations that historical leaders fought for. By having professors incorporate events happening around the nation into class lectures has helped me to be more engaged and aware of what’s going on in our nation and how to get involved. I seek to create a future that lends a listening ear from judgement and a genuine care for others. Ideally we will have a system that creates a voice for marginalized communities with inclusive conversations to better understand the needs of different cultures. I seek to create this atmosphere through ongoing education to learn about other cultures and marginalized communities and reflective conversations centered on intersectionality. In my professional career, I hope to provide support to those from under-privileged societies by aiding them in their short term goals and advocating for changes that will help them achieve their long term goals. As an aspiring child and family therapist, I can do my part in creating the future by using my passion for equality and justice to support those the neglected youth of our communities who need the understanding of their developmental needs. The people helping me in my reflection are mainly my psychology professors that I gained knowledge from, peers who challenged my thinking, and my support system back at home that continued to encourage me to overcome any challenges placed on me. My action plan to “go set the world on fire” is to challenge the unjust systems/policies that marginalized communities face and continue being an advocate by educating others and challenge others thinking. I want to work specifically with children and families to help families stay together and support one another. I think that many times children are misunderstood and underestimated as to what they know. Children are the nation’s future it is important that we instill good values and critical thinking into their minds so that they are able to evaluate situations better, free from judgement and prejudices. I want to help parents understand their children and to take heed to their needs to help children maximize their potentials and set good examples in our nation. We are at a critical point in our history politically that is calling for a more open-minded and accepting individuals that wish to make the nation a better place.
