Glima -The Wrestling of the Vikings

Welcome to PGHS Pleasant Grove High School Wrestling! This information is designed to give you a sense of our school wrestling program. If you visit our wrestling room-and we hope you do-you will be impressed with the facilities. Pleasant Grove is, however, an old school, established in 1958 and we have traditions that have been part of our wrestling program for over 40 years. One traditional aspect of PGHS wrestling is our size. Even as we are actively building and improving our physical qualities, PGHS wrestling is and will continue to be a program of about 40 wrestlers and 4 coaches. Our size plays a crucial role in the spirit of our wrestling program as we blend supervision and structure with opportunity and independence. Thus, while we are small enough to offer special help sessions, and to foster close wrestler- coach relations. We also have the size to support three full wrestling squads. In addition, we see PGHS wrestling size as being a fundamental quality of our team, a quality which distinguishes us from other sports. I want you to know that any good school will require your desire and effort if you are to succeed in your college preparation academically and athletically, and PGHS wrestling is no exception. At PGHS wrestling you will find daily expectations of dress, punctuality, attendance, preparedness and participation in the class room as well as in the wrestling room. These expectations are not always exciting, but they are part of preparing for the responsibilities of adulthood. To help you, there will be guidance and support in all areas of academic and wrestling life. In a way, wrestling for PGHS  is like making an agreement with this school, with your coach, with your parents, and with yourself to be the best person you can be. In turn, the coaching staff and I honor that agreement in our commitment to support, challenge, and encourage your abilities and efforts throughout your wrestling years. Not every wrestler can be successful all the time, and you will have moments of disappointment or frustration. Learning to accept, understand, and work through such moments serves as a vital part of your athletic experience. The coaching staff and I seek to help you develop values which give you strength and protection against the uncertainties of adolescence. In our wrestling room, we shall be frank about the importance of those immutable values-honesty, respect for others, true friendship, selflessness, to name a few-and hope you will respond to this teams idealism. Ultimately, PGHS wrestling may invite you to lead your peers by assuming various leadership positions. As you look at wrestling and perhaps other sports, consider where you can best meet your personal goals. Are you comfortable with the academic expectations? Are you ready to live responsibly?  If friendship is important, and it should be, can you give as well as receive friendship? Are you eager to go to college after high school? Do you believe wrestling can help you with that goal? Do you want to try to be the best person you can be? If you answered these questions "yes," then you ought to consider learning more about this Wrestling program. I hope this information is helpful I look forward to meeting you and personally welcoming you to the wrestling team.
