Safety Checklist

Context: I completed this assignment for the GS 4401 science class in block II, under the construction of Lisa Gross. I constructed a science safety plan in Mrs. Johnson’s first grade classroom at Cove Creek School

Impact: This activity was constructed and filled out to discover how safe our schools and classrooms were. First, in the science block II class, we wrote down possible safety concerns in the classroom. The ideas were made into a safety survey to fill out in our internship classroom to see if the classroom was safe. I found some possible safety concerns in the classroom. This survey has prepared me to be a safe classroom teacher. I will take these safety issues into major consideration when planning out my classroom.

Alignment:
This assignment aligns with the following DPI program standards:
Standard 17: Elementary teachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary schools and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement of practices in the classroom.
Indicator 1: The safety check-sheet ensures that safety issues and instructions are understood by my students.
Indicator 2: The safety check-sheet allows me to research the potential chemical and/or toxic materials stored in my classroom.
Indicator 3: I have an understanding of safety laws, codes and standards by assessing the classroom of my internship and asking questions of the classroom teacher or building administrator if particular standards need clarification.
Indicator 4: With this check-sheet, I demonstrate appropriate safety behaviors for my students and ensure that my students are aware of the procedures to follow in an emergency situation.
Indicator 5: By assessing one classroom, I can develop and assess a long-term plan for school improvement by requesting first ad kits in every classroom along with non latex gloves.
