Impact on student Learning

Context: I completed these impact on student learning project while student teaching in the Spring of 2008. I completed this project under the instruction of Mandy Bledsoe, by cooperating teacher.

Impact: While student teaching I had to construct a impact on student learning project that indicates how my eaching had an postitive impact on student learning. For my student impact project I decided to construct my project on math. I wanted to do this project on math because students are required to know thier number sense from 1-30 before they move to first grade. I constructed a pretest where students had to write their numbers from 1-30 using the correct spacing, number formation, and in the correct order. They did not do well on their pretest. Many of them did not use spacing at all, reveral in numbers, and out of order, some students did not even make it past 10. After the pretest I taught a 8 weeks unit to foucs on number sense. After teaching, I gave the pretest again and everyone improved their scores greatly.

Alignment: Through the completion of this project I have met the following NCDPI standards:

Standard 2: Elementary teachers have a road knowlege and understanding of the major concepts in mathematics.

Indicator 4: Teachers have knowledge of data, probability, and statistics. Teachers demonstarte an understanding of:

The importance of formulating th eproper question in order to obtain measurement and reliable answers though analysis.

How to sustematicall collect, organize, snslyze, an summarize data in order to predict outcomes.

Various methods of reporting an reoresenting data (graphs, charts, tables and grids)

The likelihood of an event occurring by comleting simple probablility experiments and

Ways to use appropriate software to extend and promote an understanding of ata colection, analysis of data, and display of data.

I met this standard by keeping scores of the students and their pretest and postest as well as activities they did while I was teaching the unit. I also had to construct a graph and a psread sheet that showed the growth and impact on student learning that I had teaching the unit. I learned how to report and organize my data by using charts and tables. I also had to do an analysis of student learning for this project.
