In EDF 362 we were required to do 25 hours of observation. I did my observations at Minor High School in the Spring 2011 semester. I have attached my log for observations as well as my paper reflecting upon my first observational experience.

Observation

In this course I observed at two different schools to account for my practicum hours. I went to Thompson High School first. At Thompson I observed several different ensemble classes throughout the day. It was very helpful to see a jazz band rehearse. I have never spent time in a jazz band while developing as a musician. I feel like I greatly benefitted from seeing them rehearse. Before then I was very cautious when it came to jazz band. I could even be considered skittish at times. Observing this program helped me see how a music program is run on a daily basis.

The second school I observed at for my practicum hours was Vestavia Hills High School. These observations showed me how much can be different across the economic scene. I have spent the majority of my time observing at schools where money is an issue. At Vestavia on the other hand, money is most certainly not an issue. It was a great chance to see and make a comparison on how students can make quality music with any means necessary. I also got to spend some of my time at Vestavia in their music library. I feel like this time was the greatest benefit for me while I was there. I greatly enjoyed my time at both schools and would love any experience of returning and working with them again.

Music

My other field experiences are ones that I did on my own to account for the total 150 observation hours required by my degree. These experiences allowed me to become more familiar with my chosen field of study. Some of these hours were obtained in my music methods courses EMU 403/405 while others have no course affiliation.
