Visual Artwork

Artist Statement

My purpose as an artist is to explore the forces that shape our world socially, politically and culturally and translate them into a visual message. My work serves as a continuing dialogue between artist and viewer where both the challenges and accomplishments that define our global community are discussed. Much of my work focuses on the urban landscape with its diverse and dynamic set of symbols and forms. I draw inspiration from cosmopolitan energy, allowing it to fuel my work and the conversation with an audience.

Over the past two years I have dealt with the theme of: How do artists convey meaning and create significant art? Through research and experimentation I have become convinced that the answer to this question is that artists create important work through the recognition of this dialogue. Artists that I admire, like Andy Warhol, Rem Koolhaas and Julie Mehretu, recognized the cultural context they were working in and engaged it, creating work that contributed to a global dialogue. The greatest strength of my work is that it strives to also enter into this conversation, reflecting on past and present landscapes to explore future realities.

Although there is a natural tendency in my work to focus on external issues, there is still a deep relevancy to my personal life. Pieces like Metropolisuse symbolism and aesthetics to express both my excitement for my future plans to live and study in a major urban center and my reservations and doubts about such a challenging environment. In contrasting works like these I am not only commenting on the complexity of urbanization, but also how I hold conflicting ideas and opinions even within my own head. The radical differences in my portfolio show that I am not only having a dialogue with the viewer, but am also engaged in an exploration of my own voice.
