As an Orientation Team Leader, my work days roughly followed the below schedule:
Day One
6:30 AM - Morning Staff Meeting
The entire staff met at the office to be given morning assignments and eat breakfast together.
7:30 - 11:00 AM - Morning Assignments and Check-In
Helped greet and direct students and family to check-in site, set up stage and AV equipment for welcome ceremony, answered student questions about the next few days.
11:00 AM - 12:15 PM - Dean's Talk
Facilitated Q&A sessions when asked, kept presenters on time and helped move students to their lunch locations.
12:30 PM - 1:15 PM - Lunch
Met with students, facilitated small group discussions and ice breakers, answered questions about university life and academics.
1:30 PM - 6:15 PM - Program Rotations
Presented in various formats and on multiple topics to groups of up to 100 students, helped students begin planning their class schedules, facilitated technology training, while continuing to answer questions and address concerns from students.
6:30 PM - 7:15 PM - Dinner
Again, facilitated discussion and answered questions.
7:30 PM - 8:45 - Campus Presentations and First-Year Survey
Helped with Q&A sessions, facilitated a survey of all students, kept students' attention levels up and energy levels high.
9:00 PM - 9:30 PM - Interfaith Gathering
Aided in the facilitation of a candle-lit gathering in the East Quad of campus.
9:45 PM - 10:30 PM - Scenes from Campus Life
Along with my other orientation leaders, put on a 30 minute production about the challenges that students may face when they come to campus. Afterward, led a group discussion exploring the issues more deeply and gathering student responses.
10:45 PM - 12 AM - Afterhours Programming
Helped set up and monitor activites such as an ice cream social, a dance, movie watching, arts and crafts, and game rooms. Cleaned up afterwards and returned home around 12:30.
Day Two
7 AM - 8 AM - Breakfast
Reported at 6:45 the next morning to set up tables for breakfast. Again, facilitated small group discussions and answered questions, while trying to energize student for the rest of the day.
8 AM - 12:15 PM - Program Rotations
Co-facilitated group discussions on topics such as campus finances, on and off campus life and campus resources. Then helped students through successfully registering for classes, which often was a potentially stressful and confusing situation.
12:30 PM - Closing Ceremony and Family Picnic
The entire orientation staff performed a carefully choreographed dance to Shakira's song "Waka Waka." Afterwards, OTLs met their groups' parents and engaged them in further dialogue about the school and the coming academic year.
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM - Closing Staff Meeting
The staff would quickly meet after all students, parents and guest had left to go over the orietnation program, paying special attention to particular highlights and things that needed to be improved for the next session.
