5 Themes Assignment Mr. Olson

Due: Wednesday, January 13th

Create a Microsoft Word or Google Docs document. Pick a city from your favorite country in the textbook. Address the 5 Themes of Geography about that city and tell a story on 1-2 pages with pictures and words. Include one picture and a brief desciption for each of the 5 themes of Geography. You may NOT pick Half Moon Bay. The decriptions must be typed inside a text box. For example if you were doing HMB, then for LOCATION you can use a map of HMB for the image and inside the text box describe where exactly HMB is. For PLACE you could use an image of the beach or Main Street and in the text box describe what life is like here in HMB.        

These are the 5 Themes that we discussed in class:

Location - Where something is.  Picture idea - map of the country that shows your city. 
Place - What it's like there - land/people. Picture idea - scenery pictures from your city.
Human-Environment Interaction - how humans interact with environment. Picture idea - farm, factory, surfing, skiing, bridges etc.
Movement - How people and goods move around. Picture idea - Subway, freeway, train, bike, camel etc.
Region - The general area. (examples - The Midwest, Southwest Asia, Latin America) Picture idea - Map of the region.

Keep this simple since you will have just over one class period in the lab to complete the assignment. Pick one image to represent each of the 5 themes and then write a brief synopsis about each theme in a separate text box.  See the attached sample assignment.

GRADING RUBRIC:

(50 Points)

5 Geography Themes (50 points)
Each theme clearly defined and explained (well-written) - Does the picture match the theme? Is the description clear, consise and detailed? 6 points for each theme.

5 images – 2 points each - Image = 2, fuzzy image = 1, no image = 0
5 text boxes – 2 points each - text box = 2, no text box = 0
