Here are the rules:
Form a Group of 2, 3, or 4
If you form a group of 5 then you will be penalized 30 points per person.
Due Wednesday, February 27th
We will be presenting our islands in class. If your group is not ready to present - then you will penalized 10 points per person. Take note - there are no make-up dates!!!
a) Draw the shape of your island.
b) Come up with a creative name.
c) Who discovered your island? How has it’s population been affected by colonization? Is there still a link with a current European power? Your island should have been conquered by a real European explorer in history. Who was it? What are the ethnic roots?
d) What is the land formation of your island? Is it mountainous or flat?
e) What is the climate? Check other islands in the region and make sure your island has a similar climate.
f) What are the natural resources? Are they renewable or nonrenewable? Make sure your resources are also found on other nearby islands.
g) What are the economic activities found on your island? (see f above)
h) Is there or has there ever been any political unrest on your island? Who is the leader? What is the political system? What is the economic system? What is the government like?
Please ALSO address the 5 themes of geography with regards to your island:
1) Location – Where is your island located? What is the longitude/latitude and relationship to other islands.
2) Place – What is your island like? Think of climate, physical features and the people who live there. See C, D and E above.
3) Human-Environment Interaction – What are the relationships among people and places? How have people changed the environment to suit there needs? How are people using the environment?
4) Movement – What are the patterns of movement of people, products and information? Are there any imports or exports? How are those goods moved?
5) Region – What are the characteristics of your island? Make sure they match the characteristics of the surrounding region.
The assignment:
Incorporate all of the above into a poster presentation
- Provide your own poster paper.
- Include a one-page report about your island. This should be glued onto the poster!
- Address items A-H and 1-5 in the report.
- Draw and name your Island
Grading:
- Creativity, Island name (10%)
- Neatness, island details, poster size - NO SMALL POSTERS PLEASE (15 point deduction!) (20%)
- Items A-G (40%)
- 5 themes of Geography (30%)

c) What kinds of people came there, from where and why?

e) What is the main source of income? What is the economy like there?
f) Have there been wars of conflict on your island? Who is the leader? What is the political system?
g) Please be realistic as you assemble your facts.
