A Reflection of My Experience

My general takeaway of the class is that globalization encompasses many different aspects of the world and exists everywhere, although at different rates depending on the region. Globalization often adds to the global inequalities around the world, and has more positive effects for developed counties, and negative effects for developing counties. Most often, it is money and power that controls who makes the decisions that leads to inequality. Each of us has to try to step out of our comfort zone if we want to make a positive change that will help decrease global inequalities.

The material we covered in class did affect how I situate myself in the world because it made me more aware of the horrible things that are going on that I was not previously aware of. It also made me realize how much power I have as a citizen of a developed country. This knowledge inspires me to make change, as well as being more accepting of different cultures and backgrounds. I want to make sure that whatever I end up doing in the end, it is in support of social justice and equality.

What might have made the experience better is having a guest speaker from a foreign country come in and talk about an experience directly related to one of the topics that we discussed in class, for example, how gender inequalities in a given country placed a specific woman at a large disadvantage. However, overall, this was a fantastic class that taught me to be a more aware, more accepting, and a more involved person.
