Our Week At a Glance

Some subjects will change weekly, others are themed for the entire month.  Please keep checking back.

Gr. 2 General Info.

HOMEWORK:  Your child can plan on 1-2 assignments nightly (10-20 minutes).  Their assignments will be written in their Student Planner (assignment notebook) daily.  Please check each night to be sure your child has completed all homework (even if they attend the After School Program).

SPELLING:  Each week the students will be given 15 spelling words that will be written into their Student Planner on the first day of the school week.  A Spelling Test is given on Thursday and a Dictation Test on Friday.  If it is a 4 day week, the Spelling Test will be given on the last day of the week and there will be no Dictation Test.

READING - VOCABULARY WORDS:  There will be 8 words sent home at the beginning of each story we will start in Reading.  Please review these words will them so they are able to read them well.  They will be seeing them in their stories and reading work.

WORD OF THE WEEK:  Each week the students will learn a new word we'll use in class.  They will also glue the word along with their spelling words.  After 10 weeks, we will test on those words instead of a spelling week.

SUPPLIES:  All children will need:

pencils

3 two pocket folders

1 box of crayons

pair of pointy scissors

markers

pencil case

box of tissues 

2 Dry erase markers

playdough

FOLDERS:  Your child wll have one of his/her folders going home nightly as a homework folder.  The left side of he folder will be for homework that needs to be returned the following day (L= LEAVE in the folder).  The right side of the folder will be for graded papers or correspondence that needs to be taken out (R= take out RIGHT away).  Please place any notes for me in the right side of the folder so your child will see it and give it to me RIGHT AWAY!

Reading

Bookworm (Sm.)

When we begin a new story , eight words will be sent home to practice.  These words will be in the text we read and will also show up in their homework and tests.  Reviewing the words to be read by sight will be beneficial to your child.

Each month the students will be assigned a book report to do at home.  I'll send home the directions, rubric, and some materials at the beginning of the month.  They will be responsible for a project, a written report, and an oral presentation.  April's book report project is make a book jacket (a covering for a book).  The book jacket and oral presentation are due Thursday, April 18th or Monday, April 29th.  (Before or after vacation) They are welcome to bring them in the week of April15th.

    Math Kids (Sm.)


     They will finish Chapter 9, subtracting 3-digit numbers.  They will then do Geometry along with time and money weaved in.

    They will be practicing addition and subtraction facts throughout the year.  I will be introducing and working on specific facts in class that can be reinforced at home with their flashcards  The more they do it, the stronger they will be! 

    The students finished all facts to 18.  They will now work on subtraction from 18.  They finished -0, -1, -2,-3, -4, -5, and 6. They will work on -7. Please keep practicing these facts with your child with the flashcards that were purchased. 

     

    Religion

    Dove (Sm.)

     Our virtue for April is honesty.

      They will finish learning about forgiveness and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  After vacation, they will learn about parts of the Mass.

    They will also be working in our  Good News Magazine.  It is a great way for them to understand Sunday's Gospel.

     

     

     

     

     

    Language Arts

    Notebook 1 (Sm.)

    Language Arts will be composed of 2 areas.

    Grammar: They will learn about using quotation marks in conversation.

    Writing:  They finished persuasive essays.  They will be writing spring poems.

    They will write in their journals 2 or 3 times a week.   

    Science/Social Studies

    US Map (Sm.)

    Social Studies: Map skills and Needs, Wants, Goods, and Services
