Executive Branch (Federal, State)

GENERAL CURRICULUM TEST OBJECTIVE : 0007  Understand the founding documents and governmental systems of the United States; the principles, ideals, rights, and responsiblities of U.S. Citizenship

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the three branches of the U.S. government and analyze their roles and functions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how laws are enacted and enforced.

The Executive branch leads the country, recommends new laws, and can veto or reject laws passed by the Legislative branch. This branch carries out the laws of the country, treaties and declarations of war passed by the Legislative branch, appoints federal judges, and includes the commander-in-chief of the military (the President). The President is the head of the Executive branch and this branch includes the Vice-President, cabinet members, ambassadors, and presidential advisors, members of the armed forces, and other appointed and civil servants of the many government agencies, bureaus, and departments.

At the state level, the head of the Executive branch is the Governor. The state Executive branch also includes various heads of state departments, agencies and bureaus.
