How I Have Given My Time

Orange Free Clinic

healthcare organization

August, 2011, to present: I maintain the (surprisingly-arduous) task of keeping the volunteers scheduled for each Tuesday's free clinic.  I have created an online calendar to accomplish this, which is far simpler than the old pen-and-paper method.  The calendar automatically sends out a reminder to each volunteer four days prior to his needing to be at the clinic.  The online calendar makes it far simpler to make changes to the schedule, which are frequent and many.  I also created an interactive form, with a built-in calendar and pulldown menus, to facilitate the volunteers' communication with me.  The director of the clinic has said that scheduling has never run so smoothly.

Charlottesville-Albemarle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

animal rescue organization
September, 2005 thru October, 2007: Cat Adoption Center--Two to four hours a week, I tend to and socialize the cats and answer questions potential adopters have about the SPCA's adoption policies and about cats in general.  I conduct a Matching Questionnaire with the potential new cat owner, and I handle all the paperwork concerning the adoption, including accepting the adoption fee.

Voices for Animals

animal rescue organization
December 9, 2006 through late 2008: Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Clinics--At each of these 11-hour, single-day clinics, a team of 50 volunteers assists veterinarians to smoothly and efficiently spay and neuter over 90 feral cats brought in by farm owners, cat-colony managers, and other concerned citizens.  My specific task is to assist in the recovery and discharge units.  Though physically and emotionally strenuous, it is an incredibly rewarding experience, and a project I plan to continue supporting.
June 2, 2007: Annual Yard Sale--After having donated many items to this annual fundraiser, I helped from 7am until 3pm to set up the yard sale, run it, then pack it up.  It made for a worthwhile and rewarding day, at the end of which we discovered we had raised $1,522.25, more than enough to conduct another Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Clinic.

Charlottesville Police Department, Charlottesville, Virginia

police and emergency services
03/1996-11/1996 I input warrants as a volunteer in the Services Division, and while considering a career as a police officer with a special interest in drug abuse prevention.

Orange County TRIAD

senior-citizen advocacy group
June, 2008, to present: TRIAD is a volunteer organization affiliated with the sheriff's office that produces and implements programs that safeguard seniors.  I have been asked to be their "computer jockey" in which capacity I ghost write articles, pamphlets, brochures, and the monthly "Tips from TRIAD" column as well as maintain databases and spreadsheets (e.g., the Orange County TRIAD Program works with the International Project Lifesaver Coalition, and I do all the data entry into the PL Web-based database).  TRIAD is also closely affiliated with the Art of Aging and VOAD, for which groups I volunteer the same duties.  I am also the original designer and continuing Webmaster for the Orange County TRIAD website.

Rangers Rescue

animal rescue society
joined 05/31/2009: after making a large donation of supplies and equipment, I volunteered to foster five snakes and an iguana that were rescued from a defunct pet store; I also adopted a turtle and two Cuban Tree Frogs taken during the same raid

2009 Baha'i Summer School

religious organization
My mother, a Baha'i (the most-recently-designated "world" religion), asked me to help her run the Coffee House at the "Evening of Entertainment" portion of the annual summer school.  I helped set up the tables, coffee makers, and condiments, and I made sure there was always water available (an important task, since patronage of the coffee, tea, and hot cocoa available to the 100+ attendees was brisk).  Not only did I have the satisfaction that comes from volunteering my time, but I also had the opportunity to enjoy an evening of prayer and celebration and to learn more about this important religion that preaches "unity of all under one loving God".
