police and emergency services
November 1997 to April 2001: As Clerk/Communicator in the Police Department's Services Division, working variable shifts, I documented and stored all evidence that came into the possession of the police department, and maintained the database (newly-implemented at the time) of warrants, arrests, traffic citations, accident reports, and officers' incident reports. To assist investigations, I input information to and queried the National Criminal Information Computer and American Fingerprint Identification Service. I answered all non-emergency incoming phone calls, and was the first stop for citizens seeking assistance from the police department in person, either answering the citizens' needs myself or routing them to appropriate personnel.  I also filled all the clerical needs of the lieutenants, sergeants and uniformed officers.

Spring, 1996, to Spring, 1997: as Markets Editor, I wrote "The Writer's Muse" column for the quarterly Oatmeal and Poetry, for which I published information and advice about poetry and short story markets I had researched.

September 1989 to December 1990: As Resident Assistant, I had responsibility for twelve Freshman male students.  I handled discipline, mediated disputes, organized recreational activities, and developed two dorm-wide activities per semester.  The activity of which I am most proud is a hiking trip to the Cascades, the waterfall in the mountains outside Blacksburg, Virginia. For this job, I received training in first aid, recognizing emotional and mental crises, among other skills, and I was expected to know how to handle emergencies and even to do some low-level counseling.
