Campus/Community Involvement

My Junior year of college I decided to get involved with Global Brigades and it changed my life. In the winter I was accepted into the Medical/Dental Brigade to Ghana which would be leaving that upcoming August. We spent the year fund-raising to help buy the medications and supplies we needed to bring and anxiously anticipating our trip. At least when it was time to venture across the globe, we boarded our plane and many hours of flying later found ourselves in Africa. Over the next 10 days we would host a free clinic for local villagers in a school building. We were able to interview families and talk with them about their lifestyle and culture and answer some questions they had for us. The differences between our two cultures were undeniable, but in the end we had so much in common simply due to the fact that we were all human beings. After the brigade I came back to campus and felt a fire inside to continue the journey. I ended up taking a class all about social justice, global citizenship, and international service learning. This class was amazing in so many ways, and combined with the brigade itself changed my life and truly made me feel connected to my community and to a community a thousand miles away. I am eternally grateful for that class, I literally cannot describe how grateful, and I am changed for the better because of it. Below is a slideshow with some pictures from the trip!
