Rationale Context: This lesson was garnered during my student teaching experience at Tuttle Elementary School under the guidance of Natalie Burris my cooperating teacher. It was given to us by our school nurse. Impact: This lesson is beneficial to my students especially right now when it seems like new viruses are being discovered every year. This is a timeless lesson that not only children in my classroom can use but also their parents and families. The rate of absenteeism in our schools is increasing yearly and this is a benefit to students in that they will stay healthy and attend school regularly. Standard 5: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the major concepts of healthful living.
Indicator 1: Teachers understand the foundations of good heath and help students understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Indicator 2: Teachers are alert to major health issues related to children. Standard 5 indicators 1 and 2 are evident because in teaching this lesson it demonstrates that I have an understanding of the foundations of good health and that I can properly help my students to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It also demonstrates that I am conscious of the major health issues that my students are facing daily.
Standard 13: Working alone, or with healthful living specialists, elementary teachers create opportunities for student development and practice of skills that contribute to good health Standard 13 has been met because I worked with other professionals to gather this lesson plan that will create opportunities for student development and to teach the students skills that will contribute to their health and well being.
