K-1 Science Center

Beakers (Lg.)

Rationale

Context: This artifact was created and completed under the advisement of Dr. Terry N. Carroll in the summer of 2008 for Science & Science Teaching in the Elementary School.

Impact: This artifact would be very useful in a kindergarten or first grade classroom. Students will have a hands on experience where they will be able to learn that some liquids can and some can not mix together. This center not only appeals to the kinesthetic learners but also to visual learners as well. Students will work in pairs to complete this center

Standard 17: Elementary teachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement practices in the classroom.

Indicator 1: Teachers ensure that safety issues are included in instruction and provide supervision during lab activities and field experiences.

Indicator 2: Teachers analyze the lab/activities for safety and research materials/chemicals to know safety issues before they are used.

Indicator 3: Teachers have a working knowledge and comply with the science Safety Laws, Codes, and Standards.

Standard 17 indicators 1, 2, and 3 are met with this artifact because I have demonstrated the need for safety when it comes to lab activities and field experiences. I analyzed every angle of this lab activity to determine what I needed to do to make it as safe as possible. I researched the affects of oil ingestion in children and found out what issues might be a problem. I eliminated this possible issue by placing non removable lids on all of the containers. I understand and have a working knowledge of the science Safety Laws, Codes, and Standards due to a quiz that we were required to take and pass for this class.
