Psychology B110 Teaching Assistant

I took Psychology B110 in the spring semester of my sophomore year. I was very interested in the class and found it to be more of a self-help class than an actual course. I wanted to be able to help students solve their problems in whatever little way I could, and I realized that being a TA in this course would be a good way of doing that. Thus, I applied for this position and Dr. Herold, the program director, accepted me into the B110 mentoring program in my junior year. The format of the class was such that being a peer mentor to the students meant that we weren’t just Teaching Assistants (TA), but also someone the students could open up to. Psychology B110 is a gateway course and is meant to give students a look into various aspects of the subject.

I served as a TA in Dr. Robert Stewart’s B110 class. He was an extremely understanding and patient professor, and I learnt a lot about the backstage processes of conducting a class. Dr. Herold met with all the peer mentors on a regular basis and we would often discuss how to write questions and other ways this course could be structured. During TA office hours, I got the opportunity to work with students on a one-on-one basis and was able to conduct exam reviews, solve individual doubts and walk them through the process of writing a final reflection paper. This was the most rewarding part of being a TA as I had been in their position just a semester ago and was able to share with them exactly what they had to do to succeed in this class.
