Ferguson Data Center

Working in the data center at Ferguson Enterprises over the summer of 2014 and the winter following that has taught me many things that my classes have not. I learned about the challenges faced by data centers and the knowledge needed to overcome them. When I first received the internship I thought I would only be plugging in cables from one device to another and doing inventory.

My first three weeks I was doing just that until they figured out that I knew more than they thought. After they found that out I was in charge of checking the data center for any errors, installing new servers, and assigning IP address along with subnets to those servers. I ended up being used as a new hire rather than an intern. This was the best experience I have ever had working because I enjoy working with my hands and I got to do that with computers.

There were sometimes that I was put on inventory duty usually checking another employee's work. This would have to be my least favorite part but to have an efficiently running data center the inventory must be done. I was also tasked with making a new way of keeping track of the inventory in this case I made a excel sheet but have since been working on a MySQL database to do this much easier.

I was accepted back as the intern for the 2015 summer in which I will be doing the same things but having this internship count through the business school.
