Learner Diversity Rationale:

Context:

I was able to ask the Hmong girl student some questions and also the teacher about any learning difficulties she had which were none. The teacher picked who she thought would be best for this case study and she felt she would be a good person to do it on.

Impact:

I realized that this little girl had moved here last year from California and she told me about her home life which was interesting and I learned that she is a very good student from observing her.

Alignment:

I met Standard 7 by using developmentally appropriate strategies to design and deliver instruction in all the areas in the elementary curriculum. I met indicator 3 in standard 7 by promoting new learning by using the students prior knowledge, misconnections, and thinking of the child's interest in designing the lessons. I also met indicator 4, by implementing a variety of teaching and communication strategies for instruction. I met indicator 5, by assisting students in their development of multiple learning strategies to address discipline in specific content, critical thinking, and problem solving. I met indicator 6, by modifying instruction and assessments to meet the individual needs of the students.

I met standard 14, by developing strategies to address topics that are controversial to different diverse groups. I met indicator 1 in standard 14 by understanding and respecting that families and communities have diverse attitudes about the educational process. I also met indicator 4 by exploring multiple viewpoints and respecting the values that are consistent with a democratic community and by recognizing the value of family roles in the education of diverse children. I met indicator 5 by discouraging prejudice, derogatory comments, and stereotypical perspectives and by modeling and selecting bias free instructional materials. I met indicator 6 by searching for more effective means of education all students in creating effective instructional goals, methods, materials, and skills that match the diversity of the students.

I met standard 16 by developing leaders in the schools and communities by staying informed about the educational policy issues and supporting professional development. I also participated in co-curricular activities, provided leadership in students and curriculum involvement, and connected these activities tot he development of citizenship ideals in the students. I met indicator 8 by researching and learning to apply the best practices in elementary education and by participating in the dissemination of those ideas. I met indicator 9 by understanding the importance of collaborating with my colleagues to strengthen content, research, and pedagogy as well as with the community to provide quality instruction that meets the states competencies. I met indicator 10 by advocating the rights and welfare of the students by involving appropriate school and community human resources in meeting the individual needs of each student.
