Rationale Service Learning Project:
Context: In developing this lesson I thought about what a good citizen was. The students were able to use props that were in the room to create their role play if they so desired. The students were able to work in groups on the project and the students worked together as a team. The student also collected goods such as; shampoo, puzzles, nail clippers, lotions, and etc. for the nursing home patients. The students put in to practice what they learned about being good citizens. I worked with Jenny Hoffman, and Meghan McLaughlin getting together the things we needed for the nursing home.
Impact: I will use this lesson in my classroom to engage students to learn about their community and how to become a good citizen. The students learned about community, and applied basic life skills.
Alignment: I met this standard 4 by having a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in social studies. I met indicator 14 by applying life skills and providing an enviroment that fosters critical thinking skills, and effective use of information. I was able to do that by having the children role play what a good citizen was like. I also required a multiple views of this. I had the students act out what a bad citizen, good citizen, and medium citizen was like. The students also were able to put into practice what they learned about community by catering to the community needs at the nursing home, and taking supplies to the patients.
I met Standard 11 because I connected social studies with a broad curriculum. I used the scope and sequence of the social studies curriculum to teach skills through the intergration of the social studies content with the areas listed below. I met indicator 1 by incorporating communication in the lessons. I met indicator 2 by enhancing students understanding of the humanities.
