Circle Graphs Lesson 3

Rationale:

Context:  I came up with this lesson by thinking about the different ways to use  a circle graph. The reason I used hands on materials, is because students like to work with their hands, and they can picture it better if they can physically see the problem in front of them.

Impact:  I will use this lesson in my future classroom so I can see how students come up with their own graph titles, I can how they draw and illustrate things. I can also see the process they use and how their brain is thinking. I thought this was an excellent idea to incorporate different ideas and broaden their knowledge and understanding of mathematics.

Alignment: I met standard 2 by having a broad knowledge and understanding of mathematics. I met indicator 1 by having a good knowledge of number sense, numeration, and numerical operation. I demonstrated this by illustrating, explaining, demonstrating prenumeration, numeration, fractions, decimals, rational numbers, integers, ratio, proportion, and percentages. I did this by doing a lesson on circle graphs with a third grade class at Blue Ridge Elementary in Ashe County for internship. I also met indicator 3 by having a broad knowledge of patterns, relationships, functions, symbols, and models. I did this by using a pattern for the circle graph by having the same colors side by side. I recognized and used likeness and differences to ask questions about the circle graph. I met indicator 4 by having a broad knowledge of data, probability, and statistics. I demonstrated this by showing the importance of formulating the proper question in order to obtain measurement and reliable answers through analyzing. I had the students to collect information from their jelly beans, and had them to sort jelly beans by color. I had them organize their jelly beans by sorting by color. the students summarized their data in order to predict outcomes. I had the students use various methods for reporting and representing data; such as graphs, charts, tables, and grids.
