For my sophomore year spring break, I wanted to branch out and do a service trip through a different organization. I decided to utilize my Greek affiliation and interviewed to attend Greeks For A Good Cause. I earned a spot to participate in a Habitat for Humanity immersion in San Antonio, Texas through Greeks For A Good Cause. Only brothers and sisters who were a part of a social fraternity or social sorority at Loyola University Chicago attended this trip and it was one of the most worthwhile trips of my life.
20 Greek men and women worked on 2 different houses in the city of San Antonio. There are entire Habitat for Humanity subdivisions made up of homes completely built by volunteers. In our first house, we painted, installed doors, closet shelves and doorknobs, constructed a porch, cleaned the countertops and floors. Our second house was simply foundation when we arrived. In one day, we constructed the entire frame of a house and created the entire layout. It was amazing to think that our nails were supporting the walls of a home in which parents are going to raise their children.
The GFGC immersion was one-of-a-kind.
