Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the largest social fraternity in the United States. The fraternity was founded on March 9th, 1856 at the University of Alabama in Tucsaloosa. The mission of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is to promote the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, and service for our members based upon the ideals set forth by our Founders and as specifically enunciated in our creed. The fraternity will turn 158 years old this upcoming March.
The above image depicts the creed of Sigma Alpha Epsilon; it is called "The True Gentleman" and highlights our fraternity's most important ideals. The definition was discovered by Judge Walter B. Jones, who first came across it in an Alabama Baptist quarterly. Jones sent it to John O. Moseley, the leader of the annual SAE Leadership School, and he was quite impressed with its core values. An author named John Walter Wayland wrote "The True Gentleman" in 1899 for a writing contest run by the Baltimore Sun. Overall, the creed clearly expresses the central purpose of the fraternity and gives brothers a moral code of which to lead their lives.
The Sigma Alpha Epsilon brotherhood strives to give young men the leadership, scholarship, service and social experiences needed to excel after graduation. Membership is for life. Brothers strive to act as examples for the men of today's society. Rushing Sigma Alpha Epsilon is one of the best decisions I have made at Loyola University Chicago.
