For the duration of my sophomore year, I served on the Peer Leadership Team in the Department of Student Leadership Development. I was 1 member of an esteemed 5 person team of student leaders who provide excellent leadership opportunities and experiences to undergraduates, faculty, and administrators through a values-based, inclusive process promoting development and social change. I found this experience incredibly rewarding as I learned about leadership theories and the social-change model is great deal as well as worked in an environment which fostered my unique leadership style everyday. Below is a list of my experiences in the Department of Student Leadership Development.
-
The Peer Leadership Team led various core and elective workshops for students to earn their Certificate of Leadership Development. This certificate is earned by attending 7 workshops which focus on conceptual and skill-building topics and completeing a final capstone reflection at the end of the program.
-
The Peer Leadership Team leads workshops for the Executive Boards and the general bodies of registered student organizations to build effective collaboration techniques, comprehensive teamwork abilities, and foster personal leadership growth within the group.
-
The Peer Leadership Team organizes the Student Leadership Institute. This is a 1 day conference for administrators, faculty, and aspiring student leaders to both present and attend various workshops in order to broaden horizons and work towards completeing the Certificate of Leadership Development. I lead multiple workshops about priviledge and social justice, scheduled workshop presenters and food vendors, marketing the event via flyers and social media, and worked with a $40,000 budget to make the Student Leadership Institute a success.
-
The Peer Leadership Team organizes an end of the year Leadership Banquet for any faculty, staff, and student who has participated in any programs through the Department of Student Leadership Development over the the past 2 semesters. We worked with a $5,000 budget to create a sustainability-themed banquet for anyone who has utilized our office.
-
The Peer Leadership Team completes office duties including answering phones and email, logging data and workshop critiques, scheduling events, brainstorming new workshop ideas, etc.
This opportunity included a small stipend presented at the end of the year. The money was insignificant; this experience was truly remarkable. I formed close relationships with my bosses and the members of the Peer Leadership Team as well as expanded my knowledge on leadership theory and greatly developed my personal leadership style to an entirely new level.
