On April 3-5, 2017, the USciences CUR (Center for Undergraduate Research) will hold a campus-wide celebration of undergraduate research and scholarship across all disciplines and will showcase undergraduate research, scholarly achievement, and creative work. During these three days, the USciences Festival of Undergraduate Research will feature several events. These include:
(1) 5th Undergraduate Research Symposium
(2) Images of Research Exhibit,  http://www.taskstream.com/ts/ramos155/CURImages  and
(3) Elevator Research Talk Competition
All undergraduates from any USciences department/program, performing various levels of research or scholarly/creative work and supervised by USciences faculty, are invited to participate in all of these events. Cash prizes will be awarded to to outstanding presentations. The events are open to the public and undergraduates are enjoined to invite their friends and family to celebrate their work together with their peers, faculty, and administration. Final Schedules of Events will be posted on this page as the Festival approaches.
1. 5th Undergraduate Research Symposium 5:00-7:30 pm, Wednesday April 5, IPEX 239-240
The Undergraduate Research Symposium (distinct from the University Research Day) celebrates the research and scholarly work of undergraduates. Undergraduate students are invited to submit abstracts for presentation in either poster or (oral) platform presentation.  Submissions will be reviewed by the CUAdvisory Board and up to three presentations will be selected to highlight the program as 15-minute oral presentations. An abstract not selected for oral presentation will be considered for the poster session. The first author and presenter of USciences presentations must be a full- or part-time USciences student in an undergraduate program during the Spring 2017 semester. To maximize participation, submissions reflecting ongoing work/work-in-progress are welcome.
(Please note that Research Day, scheduled for April 6, 2017, is a separate event and must be applied for separately.Students can submit the same abstract and use the same poster for both events. )
To apply to the Undergraduate Research Symposium, please email an abstract to CUR@usciences.eduwith Subject Heading "Symposium Abstract - Full Name of First Author". It should have your name, discipline, and name of faculty mentor (Faculty Mentor must authorize your submission.) Attached is an example from previous years' abstracts. Please follow the same format, but note that the abstract body should be less than 350 words. Cash awards for outstanding presentations will be given.
As with Research Day submissions, Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training is required of all USciences poster submissions.  Training (just a few minutes of your time) can be accessed at citiprogram.org.

2. Images of Research Exhibit (Monday -  Wednesday, 10 am - 5 pm, STC Atrium).
Do you have a neat graph, microscope image, or stunning photograph from your research ? Do you have a 3D form (sculpture), or even musical formthat is produced or associated with your research/scholarship work ? Then present it at the "Images of Research Exhibit" ! Cash awards will be awarded.
The USciences "Images of Research Exhibit" is a multidisciplinary, friendly exhibit/competition celebrating the diversity and breadth of undergraduate student research. Undergraduates are invited to submit entries consisting of a high-resolution image (graph, photograph, schematic, microscope image), 3D form (sculpture), audio-video clip, or musical form, and a brief text (1-2 sentences or phrases) that articulate how the image relates to the research or creative/scholarly work. Participants presenting high-resolution images should print and present their images with the brief text on a poster, with their name and discipline, to be exhibited at the STC Atrium from April 3-5. Other forms will exhibited in the same area as well. It is understood that the the CUR can use the images in future materials promoting undergraduate research at USciences.
Entries will be judged by a multidisciplinary panel. Criteria will include: the originality of the image or form, and the research it represents; the relationship between image/form and the research; and overall aesthetic appeal. A ribbon-cutting will be held and three cash prize winners will be announced at the Undergrad Research Symposium.
To apply to the Images of Research Exhibit-Competition, please email a high resolution image, representative form or audio-video clip, and brief text, with your name, discipline and USciences faculty mentor (Faculty Mentor must authorize your submission of  images that are intellectual property of a lab.) to CUR@usciences.eduwith Subject Heading "Images of Research Submission - Full Name of Presenter".

3. Two-Minute Elevator Research Talk Competition (Tues, 5-6:30 pm, IPEX 239-240)
Communicate your research and scholarly work in under two minutes - the time it takes to wait for and ride an elevator! No slides, no posters, just you and a microphone! Getting straight to the point, connecting your work to the world, explaining why your work is important, and speaking effectively - these are important skills needed to communicate your  message. And you can do it in two minutes! You don't need a completed research work to participate. Even if you're just a freshman/sophomore beginning research with a faculty mentor but have a good idea on how to present your research ideas - you're invited to participate! And win cash awards.

To apply to the Elevator Research Talk Competition, please email a 1-2 sentence abstract/statement, with your name, discipline and USciences faculty mentor (Mentor must agree to your submission) to CUR@usciences.eduwith Subject Heading "Elevator Research Talk - Full Name of Presenter".
Note: Please remember that these events will be public events and that public disclosure of an invention may result in the loss of patentability. If you believe that your abstract/poster discloses a potential invention, please contact j.jasmin@usciences.eduor visit the Office of Technology Management (OTM) community page on Blackboard.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION FROM UNDERGRADUATES FROM AREA COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

We are inviting surrounding colleges and universities in the Greater Philadelphia-South Jersey area to send their undergraduates to participate in the Research Poster Session of the Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 5, 2017, 5-7:30 pm. This is a great opportunity and exposure for undergraduates as they present their research, meet and interact with other undergraduate researchers from other institutions, enlarge their professional networks, and promote collaborations. If interested, please send an abstract (less than 350 words) to CUR@usciences.edu with the Subject Heading "Your University Name - Your Name - Field/Major" by March 27, 2017. When your abstract is accepted, we will give you additional instructions on where to post your research poster (typically 4' x 3') on April 5, 2017.
