Educational Improvement Plan

The Educational Improvement Plan is centered on Oral Presentations at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School. Fannie Lou is one of 28 schools across New York State that is part of the Coalition of Consortium Schools. Consortium schools have devised a system of assessment that is documented through Exhibitions resulting in portfolios and most importantly oral presentations, which are required for graduation.

A public presentation of work to authentic and expert audiences richly extends our students’ learning. Panel presentations provide opportunities for students to make connections and deepen their learning by putting their thinking into conversation with that of others, both peers and outside experts, and by providing time for probing and open-ended questions that allow students to demonstrate what they have learned

The problems that we are encountering however are on two levels, the first level are the ineffective ways that students using the  “Habits of Mind” to defend or have a discussion about the piece being presented more around analysis.  Students are having difficulties thinking through their own work and the work of others. On a school level we have no documentation of these presentations and no specific rubric that includes languages for all subjects. Therefore the Educational Improvement Plan will document the oral presentations during the schools year and develop rubrics, which will become part of a student’s digital portfolio.
