Reflection

"I truly believe that learning is a lifelong journey that we all take".- Christine Hull

I do not believe that much has not  changed between my early leadership philosophy and my current leadership philosophy. My core beliefs are that all students have the ability to be successful citizens, and that all stakeholders need to play a role  in educating the whole child  However, for all the above to happen a leader needs to have a clear vision that is embraced by all who are involved in the teaching learning progress. In addition, communication and collaboration is very important.

Version 1: In my early leadership philosophy I discussed distributive leadership however as I began to reflect on my current philosophy I realized that transformational leadership also highlights my leadership style- shared vision, strong communication, empowering others to take on leadership roles, and fostering collaboration amongst all.

Version 2: Developing a shared vision was the foundation of my philosophy and I was able to work collaboratively with others in revising a schools vision. During this process the importance of analyzing data, of identify ways that the new vision can be communicated to all and having very clear implementation plans were essential for ownership of the new vision. The takeaway experience is that as a leader is it important to set up systems in place such as teams to help develop a shared vision. However, after I realized that this can be very messy but after completing my class around case studies and action plans I realized that the foundation for change is looking at data and through shared decisions identifying strategies that can close the achievement gap.

Finally, teachers need to feel supported and professional development should be focused on the needs around teaching and learning of all students.  In addition, a leader should promote growth amongst the staff and empower others to take on leadership roles. Moreover, the role of the parents are essential for education and a leader should reach out to all parents and community organizations to support the school community.
