Model Comparison Paper
For this assignment you will choose two of the curriculum models we cover in "Specific ECE Curriculum Models" in the course schedule. The goal of your 5 page paper (typed, doubled spaced, one-inch margins, 11 or 12 pt. font) will be to complete a clear, well-organized, and thoughtful comparison of these two curriculum models.
After selecting and studying your two curriculum models and studying them, write an essay comparing them. Your paper should include:
-
A title page with the paper title, your name, the course name and number, and date.
-
A brief overview of each curriculum model.
-
A careful analysis of similarities and differences between the two curricula.
-
A concluding section describing the advantages and disadvantages of each model from your perspective as an early childhood educator, emphasizing how using one or both curriculums can help you:
-
Enhance educational opportunities for all children.
-
Plan a developmentally-appropriate curriculum for each child in your group.
-
A reference list using current APA style, including at least 3 references. Refer to the syllabus bibliography to see examples of APA reference list, and/or study the “Introduction to APA Style” on the Purdue Online Writing Lab, http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/1/. (See especially the sections, “Parts of a Paper,” “References,” and “Citing sources in your text.”)
-
At least one of your three references should be an additional source you find outside the listed required or optional readings for this class. (A professional journal article, book, book chapter, or web-based article is acceptable.)
You will first write and hand in a complete first draft of your Model Comparison paper. The due date for your draft is listed in the course schedule. Your first draft of the paper is worth 15 points of the assignment total of 80 points. I will read your first draft and return the paper to you with comments and suggestions to help you improve the final paper.
The final draft of the Model Comparison paper (65 pts.) will be graded based on:
-
How well you cover all of the points listed above.
-
The accuracy of your description of the models.
-
How thoughtfully you compare the two models (e.g., focusing on features of the models that would have an important impact on the experiences of children and teachers and thinking about what the impacts would be in practice; using the model comparison framework we discuss in class, etc.)
-
Proper referencing of all sources in text and in the reference list. (proper APA style)
-
How well you organize the paper overall and how clearly you express yourself in writing. (Grammar and spelling are important!)
Important Note! Ability to express your ideas clearly in writing, using proper spelling and grammar, is an important skill for the early childhood professional. I will grade papers based in part on the quality of your writing. Seek help early if you don't feel confident about your ability to write clearly and using proper English grammar. If you have a friend or classmate whom you know is a good writer, ask him/her to be your editor (e.g., ask that person to read and comment on your rough drafts-- not write the paper for you!) Also, in the past, students have received helpful assistance from tutors at the Purdue Writing Lab (See http://owl.english.purdue.edu ).
