Leadership, Brick by Brick

Team.

Leaders create change, right? But what exactly is leadership? Who is a "leader" and what qualities for they exhibit?

Leadership Reflection

To learn more about leadership our class read Caldwell and Dixon's "Love, Forgiveness, and Trust: Critical Values of the Modern Leader" and a selection from Kouzes and Posner's "The Leadership Challenge".

Our first assignment was to reflect on the following:

         1. What values and styles of leadership do you believe in/follow/use? Why?

         2. What values and styles of leadership do you see at your internship site? How do you (and any coworkers) respond to those values and styles?

For this assignment, I decided to reflect aloud and record my thoughts. The outline of what I spoke about is below and the recording is also attached.

First I discussed my personal leadership values by referring to the Social Change Model of Leadership and the concept of being an everyday leader: essentially being the change that you want to see in the world, and being a person of integrity in everyday seemigly small acts. I also referenced our class's Kouzer and Poser readings in this section.

To answer the second question I talked about the culture at Madonna House and quoted Caldwell and Dixon's concluding sentence to describe the kind of environment that is cultivated at Madonna House. I provided some examples I noticed and how they serve as a reflection of Sharita's leadership style.

Leadership Profile

The flyer below depicts Catholic Charities Madonna House Program Supervisor, Sharita Sloan's story and leadership style. I learned from her about caring for the staff you work with first so that you ensure that the end beneficiaries, the clients, are always put as a first priority for everyone.
