Math Lessons Rationale

Context: I developed this series of three consecutive math lesson plans under the instruction of Dr. Art Quickenton in the Spring of 2008. These lessons were taught in Mrs. Tonya Denny's 6th Grade classroom at Blue Ridge Elementary School in Warrensville, NC. There was a lesson on ratios, unit rates, and proportions. There is hands-on material as well as textbook work and worksheets.

Impact: After modifying these lessons I want to teach them in my future classroom. I want my students to gain the knowledge of ratios, unit rates, and proportions and understand how they go along with the work they have already done with fractions.

Alignment:

Standard 2: I have met this standard by having and expressing a broad knowledge of mathematics.

Standard 7: I have met this standard by developing age appropriate lessons that the students can relate to in real life and will interest and engage them.

Standard 9 Indicator 3: I have met this standard by communicating with my students to where they are effectively able to explain to me using proper math terms to explain what they are doing, and they are able to evaulate their peers answers and responses to questions.

NC- North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards
Standard: Standard 9: Elementary teachers understand and use the processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connection, and representation as the foundation for the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Indicator: Indicator 3: Teachers develop instruction in communication that enable all students to:
Detail: Organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication;
Detail: Communicate their mathematical thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others;
Detail: Analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others;
Detail: Use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely.
