Reading Assessment

Reading Assessment Rationale

Context: This assignment was done in the Spring of 2008 in RE 4030 under the instruction of Dr. Ellen Pesko. I had different grade level passages what a child was asked to read for me and I was to count any errors they made, then have them answer questions to test their comprehension of the passage that they read. The student also had a flash-word test done to see how many words they could read correctly only having the words flash up on a computer screen for just a second.

Impact: Because of this assignment I know how to conduct a reading inventory. This will help me in my future classroom because I will be able to test my own students to make sure they are reading on the correct reading level and then I can recommend them books to read on their level based on this information.

Alignment:

Standard 1 Indicator 1:  I met this standard by assessing the developmental state and reading level of my stduent to find their instructional and independent reading level.

Standard 1 Indicator 6:  I met this standard by understanding how important it is for the student to be reading on their own specific reading level, whatever it is.  When studetns don't read on their reading level, this causes them to be frustrated and form a bad opinion of reading that will last a lifetime.  Knowing what this student's reading level is, I was able to come up with a list of books that would be appropriate for this student to read both independently, and for instruction.

Standard 1 Indicator 7:  I met this standard by understanding that the student's vocabulary will continue to change and documenting this.

Multi-Text Unit

Multi-Text Unit Rationale

Context: I created the Multi-Text Unit for Dr. Ellen Pesko in RE 4030-434 in the Spring of 2008. I was asked to take a fiction and a non-fiction text to help teach a certain topic. I chose to use “Through my Eyes” and “Watsons Go to Birmingham” to help me teach the topic of the Civil Rights Movement. This unit helped to integrate 5th grade English Language Arts as well as Social Studies.

Impact: My Multi-Text Unit is an excellent assignment that I will use in my future classroom one day! This used a fiction and a non-fiction text to help teach a certain topic that is sometimes hard for young students to comprehend the meaning of. Students learned vocabulary words from a historical context as well as learning about major events and heroes from the Civil Rights Movement. The two stories that I chose were excellent examples to teach civil rights with to young children because the main characters were just children themselves so it helped the students to connect with the stories.
