Gaming Technology

Welcome to the Gaming Technology section of my portfolio.

I worked independently in creating the attached game, which is designed to be used by students at a fourth-grade level. The game format is a copy cat of the television series, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? This game will help develop students’ vocabulary skills, as well as become comfortable with frequently used words, which will impact their literacy development. There is great value in using this type of educational game because it extends the implemented lesson or concept in a fun and engaging way, which benefits the students by allowing them to make meaningful connections.

Student participation in playing the trivia game will result in an achieved outcome of accurately identifying various aspects of different sports that they will have learned through physical education. The subject matter of the trivia questions is sports. Students will use their knowledge about sports including rules, equipment, generalized basics, etc., in order to complete the game.

This game will appeal to most students’ diverse learning styles. Visual, tactile, and even kinesthetic learners will enjoy this game. Visual learners will benefit from the detailed game graphics, tactile learners will be enabled to use the computer for a hands-on experience, while kinesthetic learners will draw from their own experiences about sports, and movement, which will help them connect to the lesson. The instructional strategies utilized through this game, depends on the ways that students learn best. One option students could choose would be to pair up with a fellow classmate to complete the quiz and take turns reading the questions.

This type of game is beneficial for students because they are able to complete the trivia questions at their own pace, which ensures that students are receiving adequate time to fully interpret the concepts they learn. This game could be used independently or in a group and would be fun and engaging either way.

After completing the game, students will report the money value they were able to reach which indicates the number of questions they were able to accurately answer. This game will work to segue into further instruction, perhaps actual implementation of a sports game. Teaching students the basics about certain sports will allow for more play time since the students will already understand various aspects of specific sports.

Media Evaluation of Student Usage

Welcome to the Media Evaluation of Student Usage section of my portfolio.

This section features an attached reflection on the usage of the sports trivia game I created, which was used by my ten year-old cousin. I observed my cousin actively engaged in the game as he used his background of sports acquired through physical education to answer each question. Through working with my cousin I learned that students are motivated by topics that are relevant and interesting to them. He was able to effectively complete the game and solidify his current knowledge about sports.
