TIMMY GLOBAL HEALTH AT IUPUI

I am actively involved in many student organizations at IUPUI that focus on community service. My most signficant role is that of an Executive Board Member of Timmy Global Health at IUPUI. I began serving with this organization my first semester. My involvement began with volunteering at tabling events to advocate for the work done by Timmy and assisting with preparation for a biannual fundraiser, the "Glow"bal Health Dance. I became more involved, however, when I started volunteering each week with our community partner Garden on the Go. Garden on the Go partnerned with IU Health in order to provide food access to areas with high food insecurity throughout the Indianapolis region. They offered fresh produce at competitive prices. As stated by IU Health, "Garden on the Go® was launched in May 2011 as part of Indiana University Health's comprehensive obesity prevention strategy; the mobile produce program improved access to fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables in neighborhoods in Marion County and beyond with limited access to healthy food. Garden on the Go® was set up in a farmers' market style and operated Monday through Friday, year-round making weekly stops at a variety of highly visible community partner locations. At the program's end, Garden on the Go® had provided 393 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to over 97,000 customers." The Garden on the Go program sadly ended last year. Timmy Global Health decided to maintain their relationship with IU Health and has since devoted some of their resources to the Healthy Food Access Grant Initiative, of which the goal is to address areas of food deserts throughout Indianapolis. In the past semester, I have served as an Executive Member, with a more specific role as the School of Science Undergraduate Student Council (SOSUSC) representative. Through this role, I was able to connect Timmy Global Health with the School of Science and other organizations on campus. In the upcoming semester, my focus will relate to unifying the various segments of the IUPUI chapter (Student Outreach Clinic, Medical Brigade, Service, Advocacy, Event Committee, General Members, etc) through social outings. It is my goal that Timmy will develop into a more cohesive unit, and from the cooperation among sections of the organization, will be able to provide more service both domestically and internationally, raise more awareness concerning global health, and increase our donations to 7Elements. Lastly, I am the president for the upcoming academic year (2017-2018) and am orchestrated the transition of the Executive Board over the past semester. I look forward to implementing our designed goals for the year as we continue to increase awareness about global health issues!

PLTL AND TA IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL BIOLOGY AT IUPUI

After succeeding in my first semester of general chemistry, I applied for a position as a peer leader for the program Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL). As a peer leader, my goal is to facilitate critical thinking and reasoning skills regarding course content in a small-group environment of approximately 9-10 students. In these small-groups, termed "workshops," students are encouraged to work through practice problems that will increase their knowledge of course material. Particularly, studies have shown that students benefit more when they problem solve and collaborate in a team in comparison to recitations that are lecture-based. I desire to create a comfortable, collaborative learning environment for my students. To do so, I have acquired and integrated pedagogical techniques such as evaluating and changing group dynamics, redirecting, and classroom assessment techniques into the workshops. I want to facilitate further learning of C105 and C106 (General Chemistry I and II) material and provide mentorship to students enrolled in the course. I act as a coach, providing advice but not performing the activity in place of the student; a troubleshooter, evaluating group dynamics and strategizes ways to support various learning styles; a collaborative learning guide, creating an environment that encourages positive small group learning; and a chemistry student who has previously done well in the course, thus serving as a source for help and advice in learning the content. Furthermore, I was a teaching assistant (TA) for a Experimental Chemistry II Lab, where I provided instruction to 32 students each week. I developed and utilized excellent verbal, written, and instructional communication skills in this role. I also demonstrated a methodological approach to resolving conflicts and problem solving as necessary throughout the semester. I emphasized lab safety, problem solving, graphical skills, professional writing, technical skills, and understanding of general chemistry materials.

ACE, INDIANA LATINO COALITION, AND IMPACT CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION

Additionally, I volunteered at Riley Children's Hospital's Ronald McDonald House and the Wheeler Mission Medical Clinic at the Center for Women & Children through Honors Academics for Civic Engagement. Moreover, I volunteered for Mass Move-In Day at IUPUI both of my years here. I helped many families transport items from vehicles to dorm rooms, provided directions, and assisted in providing smooth transitions for incoming college students. Furthermore, I volunteered on iServe Day of Community Service with a large part of IUPUI's student body. I specifically worked at the White River State Park to clean the environment along the canal area to provide a safe and accessible path for walkers, runners, and bikers in the Indianapolis area. In addition, I volunteered at the Indiana Latino Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence in order to fulfill a service learning component of my Spanish Conversation course. I spent 20 hours working on various projects that developed by cultural breadth and improved my speaking and translating skills. Ultimately, I was simply grateful that my small bit of service contributed to the advocacy against domestic and sexual violence in my community. Lastly, I am a Co-Life Group Leader with Impact Christian Organization at IUPUI. I help to lead a 20 member life group through a Bible devotional once a week. I believe that I benefit more from this leadership position than they likely do from me leading them! It has helped me to be honest about my relationship with Christ and the struggles I face on a day-to-day basis. I hope that through this position I am fostering a community of genuine love and comraderie here at IUPUI.
