Artifact 14 - safety and sanitation compliance

There are two safety issues in the Animal Science program; the safety of the students when they handle the animals and the basic safety and sanitation of the facility. Both issues are addressed by the classes.

Students are required to take a tour of the facility with an instructor. During this tour all of the animals are discussed and proper handling is demonstrated. Students are also required to fill in a chart about all of the animals during the informational tour. After the tour students are then given a lab information sheet and basic lab procedures are discussed. The students are required to take a test on all of this material before being able to handle the animals. Students must score 100% or correct their answers before they can work with the animals. The lab chart, lab procedures sheet and the test are attached.

The county has recently hired a safety specialist. There was some confusion about how to handle some sanitation issues in our area. Although we have animals, we do not experiment on them in the traditional animal laboratory way. All reported issues have been corrected except the covering of our bedding supply. The bedding is purchased in bags, moved around the lab, and depleted quickly. To prevent contamination of new bedding, we are searching for an appropriately sized,  container on wheels that is not like our current trash cans. When a suitable covered container is found we will purchase and begin utilizing them. The safety specialist reports are attached.
