​Instructional and Professional Use of Technology

 

[Note to Candidates:  This page is designed to allow you to provide evidence of how you use technology to impact learning and support teaching.  You must provide evidence that you can use technology as an active part of your teaching.  This must be more than simply showing a presentation or using an Internet site (such as showing a video).  However,  if you have lessons that include such applications as part of a lesson and you can document the impact of technology, that is appropriate.  Second, you must provide evidence that you can engage students in actively using technology for learning.  Finally, you must provide evidence that you use technology for your own professional development.

Teachers in today's classrooms must be able to use technology to support and enhance their teaching and student's learning.  They must be able to plan lessons that utilize technology and they must design learning experiences where children use technology to construct learning.  ISTE, the International Society for Technology in Education, has developed a set of technology standards -- competencies that all teachers should have.  Throughout this portfolio are examples of how I have used technology.  On this page are some specific examples of how I use technology for a wide range of professional activities.


Using Technology to Enhance My Teaching

Artifact: Lesson For Virtual Day

During my second student teaching placement in Springville I was tasked with teaching an online lesson for the students virtual day on the topic of scatter plots. On Wednesday’s Springville middle school students have a virtual day that consists of 20 minute periods. For my lesson I was able to get log onto the Google Meet online video chat, then bring up notes on my ipad and share my screen to share the notes on scatter plots and be able to play a review assessment game online. I used this online instructional strategy that hoped to encourage learners to listen to the information given about scatter plots and then use the material learned to play the review game and interact with the material. I have also used a similar instructional strategy in person in my Math labs with review material using the Smart Board and playing and online review game. This technology enhanced by teaching by allowing for me to communicate with students online, write my notes and share my screen so student were able to take notes and follow along, then I was able to do a informal assessment using an online game.

Artifact: Lesson for Virtual Day

Students were required to log onto the Google Meet through the Google Classroom and then take notes and be able to log on and play the interactive review game I created. This showed student use of technology to assist in their learning because they were reviewing the material using and online game assessment tool. 

Use of Technology for My Professional Development

Artifact: Social Media Project

At the beginning of SPED 440 we were asked to follow a handful of Facebook groups of parents of children with special needs or other individuals with special needs. Throughout the class we were asked to read the information people posted to the group, and even interact with the group. This project helped me to understand different communities and see what their concerns were not only in the educational world but in life itself. I believe this project will help me to have a more inclusive environment in my future classroom and be able to understand a little bit better of what my students with special needs may be going through in the classroom and in life. This also demonstrates my use of technology to learn more about the families and students that will be involved in my future classroom.
