Learning Environments

STANDARD 3: LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
THE TEACHER WORKS WITH OTHERS TO CREATE ENVIRONMENTS THAT SUPPORT INDIVIDUAL AND COLLABORATIVE LEARNING, AND THAT ENCOURAGE POSITIVE SOCIAL INTERACTION, ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT IN LEARNING, AND SELF MOTIVATION.

Artifact 1 - Learner Centered Lesson

During my second Student Teaching placement in Springville Middle School I taught a lesson that incorporated both individual learning and collaborative learning. Right before students left for spring break I taught a lesson on graphing a line using a table of values and how to write an equation for a line. This was in a Math Lab so students had already learned the material in class, which allowed me to teach a real life example. My lesson was centered around where the cheapest option for me to "go on" spring break. Students were asked to pick where I should go given two options and then were asked to work individually but could collaborate with classmates that picked the same option to prove or disprove which was the cheaper option. This lesson encouraged individual learning and  collaborative learning because students worked on their choice and then discussed their findings with classmates that picked the same place. After students investigated their own choice, we as a class went over what the cheapest option would be and where I should travel to on spring break. This lesson also demonstrated positive social interaction and active engagement because students were invested to see if their option was the cheapest and if their place would be where I went on spring break as well as discussions about where they wanted to go on vacation.

Artifact 2 - Behavioral Management Plan

During EDUC 306 we were asked to develop a Behavioral Management Plan. This plan was to help us set up our classroom in our first few years of teaching. We were required to have many procedures planned out to then be able to implement them when we get into our future classroom. Procedures included seating chart, about me page, class rules, procedure list, consequence list, class contract, schedule, typical homework sheet, and lesson plan template.  This demonstrates how I worked to create an environment that supports student learning by planning and thinking about what procedures I want in place in my future classroom to promote an encouraging environment. For example I plan to implement an about me page to encourage social interaction with my students and get to know them starting on the first day. Also, I plan to encourage students to actively participate in coming up with classroom rules and consequences for breaking these rules. These are just a couple of the procedures I planned to help create a positive learning environment starting on the first day of classes.

Artifact 3 - Cultural Responsive Teaching Article Reviews

In EDUC 330 we were asked to read and respond to articles on Culturally Responsive Teaching, CRT. We read about what CRT was, how we can implement it, and why it is important in the classroom. Through this assignment I learned alot more strategies that I want to implement in my classroom to promote a more positive learning environment for my future students. This demonstrates my dedication to making a positive environment for future students because of my continuous research and willingness to try different strategies to make my future classroom more culturally responsive and an encouraging learning environment.
