Many forms of formative assessment were utilized in this lesson.  The answers, observations, and responses in the worksheets, Exploring Linear Functions and Making Connections – Linear Functions were used to check for student understanding.  The teacher also walked around during the Matching Cards activity to observe and assess whether or not the students had made the connections between the Explore stage of the lesson and the formalized content in the Explain stage. Additionally, formal and informal discussions held throughout the Engage, Explore, Explain, and Elaborate stages served as formative assessments which allowed the teacher to make lesson changes based on student strengths or weaknesses.  This lesson also included a summative assessment which documented student understanding by assigning a grade.  The students were graded on their final posters and class presentations using a rubric.  The students were supplied with the rubric in the beginning of the Elaborate stage to assist in the creation of the posters as well as the preparation of the presentations.
