<font color=#000066>Inch Worm</font>

inch2.JPG

Inch by Inch     By: Leo Lionni

Inchworm likes to measure things and this proves to be very useful to him when a bird is ready for his snack.  As inchworm worms his way out of becoming lunch by proving his worth to a bird, he finds himself on a measuring adventure.

This lesson is created for a second grade class and uses the inch as a tool for measurement.

Materials:

  • Green pipe cleaners/chenielle sticks
  • Sissors
  • Worksheet
  • Bird pictures or stuffed animals

 Process:

After the book is read to the class, students measure and cut one inch pieces of pipe cleaner and use them as inchworms to measure the objects on the worksheet.  Students should be encouraged to explore with their pipe cleaner "worms."  The students will record their lengths on the worksheet.  Students can estimate and then measure, or they can explore the room looking for objects to measure.
