There are many choices for reading materials about voting. There are stories about Susan B. Anthony and the female suffragists. There is a book in the Little House on the Prairie Series, (The Rose Years) called, New Dawn on Rocky Ridge. There are several chapters that address suffrage and different voting issues. Because this book is actually a true story of Laura Ingalls Wilder's daughter Rose, it is a wonderful choice for me to read to my class. I will encourage the students to read about the pioneers of voting rights and we will have discussions and book reports on these choices.
Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton believed that the Declaration of Independence was gender bias toward men. Shortly after the Civil War they had the Seneca Falls Convention and drafted the Seneca Falls Declaration. There are some minor differences and I will use the Seneca Falls Declaration and the Declaration of Independence to show how the women changed the document. For example:
Declaration of Independence:
We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal.
Seneca Falls Declaration:
We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men and women are created equal.
