I will ask my students to use real world examples as often as possible when doing mathematics. I like this example of figuring out how tall an object is in relation to the student. The student will measure his or her shadow and the shadow of the cactus. Then they will use the proportion method to determine the height of the cactus. I will have explained how to do this before I send them outside to measure something.
The triangles are proportional. Therefore:
height of cactus = height of student
length of cactus shadow length of student shadow
X = 4
4 2
2X = 16
X = 8ft.
I have created an activity for students to practice their probability skills. They will first evaluate the coin toss board to see what the probability is of landing on a blue space, a white space or a numbered space. Then the students will record the answers to their own coin toss. I feel that this activity gives the students a concrete understanding of a topic that can be very challenging.
