Many schools have had to cut out social studies in order to focus on reading, writing and math. It is important that we incorporate history into our curriculum. I have designed a few math activities that will enhance our voting theme. Below are some ideas and activities that incorporate math into our lesson.
Third grade curriculum requires students to be able to create and read a graph. This is a worksheet that we can complete after the students paricipate in our classroom vote. I have created an overhead transparency to work on the graph with the students.
This graph is important to show how essential the vote is for everyone, not just white men. We will discuss the questions at the bottom and I hope that the students will literally see how important each and every vote is.
Being able to read a map is important, and we can use current events to do math problems. Especially during an election year, it is easy to follow the travel of the Presidential candidates. As they go from one town to another, they are using gasoline and milage. I will have my students mark a U.S. road map and figure the mileage. We will then figure out how much it will cost for them to travel at the current rate of gasoline. This math activity is a strong use of life skills.
