Context:
I created and helped with instruction of reading during Student Teaching in the Fall 2009 at Maiden Elementary School under the instruction of Carmelle Martin in 3rd grade.
Impact:
During one of my final weeks during Student Teaching, my cooperating teacher and I worked with the students learning about fables. One of the days when we were reading fables, the students read the story "The Goose Who Laid the Golden Egg". I then instructed them on how to use the characters, the setting, the problem, the solution, and the moral to help them create a summary for the story. The students were to take what they wrote about each of these categories and create a summary putting them together to form paragraphs.
Alignment:
Standard 8: Teachers design instructional programs and strategies that build on students' experiences and existing language skills to help students become competent, effective users of language.
Indicator 2: Teachers help students use a variety of strategies to monitor their own reading comprehension.
I met this standard by creating a way for the students to show their reading comprehension by creating their own summary of the story. By re-reading their summary, they will know how their summary compares to the story.
