Demonstration

Context:

This demonstration was met during the Summer 2008 semester through Appalachian State University under the advisement of Dr. Terry Carroll. During this class I created a science demonstration that would be an excellent task in an elementary classroom.

Impact:

This demonstration is a science demonstration using heat dispersion.  Students will understand that when water is involved, heat is not centrally located, but will disperse. 

Alignment:

Standard 10: Teachers provide active inquiry experiences in the teaching of science by using various questioning skills and developing science processing skills (predicting, classifying, measuring, inferring, interpreting, analyzing, and synthesizing).

     I met this standard by creating a demonstration that provides a way for students to inquire about science and by using questions during the demonstration that will increase their learning.

Standard 17: Elementary teaachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement practices in the classroom.

Indicator 1: Teachers ensure that safety issues are included in instruction and provide supervision during lab activities and field experiences.

Indicator 2: Teachers analyze the lab/activities for safety and research materials/chemicals to know safety issues before they are used.

Indicator 4: Teachers model and communicate appropriate safety behaviors.

     I met this standard by not only going over the safety procedures that must be used during the demonstration, but also showing the students the safety procedures by modeling what they should do and explaining what not to do.
