Newspaper Journalist

1. Pick your favorite scene from the book.

2. Do your homework!!  What I mean by that is do your research that surrounds the events of your scene.  Go to the resources page and look up information about the 1960's or about a particular event or issue.  For example: homelessness, gang violence, heroic events (saving the children from the burning church), economic boundaries. 

3. Read an article in the Hickory Daily Record and take notes.  What was important?  Did the title catch your eye?

4. Draft a 250 word newspaper article using 2 quotes from the book.  Find characters in the story to confirm what you wrote about.

Don't forget the 5 W's (Who?,What?,Where?,When?,Why?)!

5. Have classmate peer review your work.

6. Rewrite

7.  Write final draft.
