Culture Report and TIP Case Study

Context:

The Culture Report and Case Study were made for CI 3000, Learner Diversity, Fall 2007 and Fall of 2008. It was done under the advisement of Eric Groce (CI 3000-350/2007) and W. Thomas Jamison (FDN 3800-350/2008) with Appalachian State University.

Impact:

I learned a great deal about the Students with Disabilities by completing this culture report. I feel it has prepared me to become a better teacher because it exposed me to a group of individuals that are often "overlooked." As a teacher I will have a classroom for students from various walks of life. By completing this report, I have a better understanding of the abilities of students with learning disorders. I have a helpful list of agencies and resources that I can share with the student and their family, if needed. In addition to being able to better understand and meet the needs of IEP students. Finally, I will be able to incorporate ideas with my colleagues as to whom ADHD people really are, and why some common assumptions about them are misconceptions.

Alignment:

NC Standards for Elementary Teachers that were met:

Standard 4

Indicator 4 was met by finding appropriate children’s literature about the Hispanic population. I was also able to gain the knowledge of other multicultural children’s literature by listening to other culture report groups present their report that also included literature books they selected.

Standard 14

Indicator 1 was met by completing the culturally relevant classroom practices section of the culture report. I also gained an understanding and respect for many ADHD students diverse attitudes about the educational process.

Indicator 2 was met because in my culture report group we discussed the controversial issues we found regarding the Hispanic population. We also gathered data in order to make informed decisions about their population.

Indicator 3 was met because I was able to find accurate information regarding students with ADHD. By knowing the facts, I was able to help my classmates to see appropriate solutions to controversial problems related to these students.

Indicator 4 was met because I researched different viewpoints regarding the ADHD population. I also learned the best ways to meet the needs of ADHD students.

Indicator 5 was met because I learned a great deal about the stereotypical perspectives Americans have concerning the ADHD population. By completing the assumptions and stereotype section of the report, I was able to see how many of these beliefs are misconceptions.

Indicator 6 was met by completing the section on culturally relevant classroom practices. By using this information and the information presented by other culture groups, I am able to find ways to meet the needs of diverse students.
