Students learned about the basic principles of being a citizen and how vital it is to the development of responsible members of the community. This lesson also helped students develop a sense of place as to the characters of the book and what each persons role consisted of.
Context:
This assignment was created for CI-3110, Social Studies in the Elementary School, Fall 2007. It was created under the advisement of Dr. Eric Gross. This service learning project was completed during my internship at Thorton Elementary School. I worked with another third grade intern to complete this assignment.
Impact:
The assignment taught me how to gain tips and find out the rules we needed to follow to implement this project by working with the teacher, the students, and their parents. I learned the importance of having your students take part in community service and helping others in our community reach a much needed goal.

Alignment:
Standard 4:
Indicators 3 and 11: This indicator was met through the service project because the teacher demonstrated the connection between the individual students and their own community. This indicator was met as I taught the students in my internship about the importance of responsibility, respect, and being a good citizen. I explained to them the reasons for all citizens to help their community.
Standard 16:
Indicators 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7: This indicator was met by having the students participate in cleaning at Lowes Motor Speedway. Permission was required by administration to take this trip thus meetings and discussions were had with the Administrator, other Staff invovled and myself. During these meetings it was discussed and established how funding would be acquired to pay for the transportation of students to the race track and back home. This assignment helped the students learn to become active in their communities and to be involved in things outside of school. Not only did this project implement student involvement; it led to communication between parents and myself. This indicator was met by teaching students about others in their school district by raising money for the arts. The project involved volunteering to help the band raise money.
